The last line of this “ecstatic lecture,” as Kierkegaard calls it, reveals another layer of meaning behind his skirmish with the aesthetic mentality.
Perhaps the conclusion of the “lecture” is not the sum and substance of all philosophy, but for Kierkegaard it is the sum and substance of all Hegelian philosophy We have already mentioned that the metaphysics of George Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel had deeply influenced Kierkegaard. Hegel had the uncanny knack of evoking hostile attacks from those whom he most influenced. This is particularly true of his most famous “disciples,” Karl Marx and Søren Kierkegaard. The very titles of some of Kierkegaard’s works are parodies of Hegel, who, upon completing his theories, believed that most all philosophical problems had been solved by what he called his “System.” He did, however, admit that there might be a few loose ends which needed to be tied together, but he supposed that such could be a accomplished in a short postscript to his System that would be written by his disciples.
